bomoi
bo-MOI
life
French: vie
Bomoi ezali kitoko.
Life is beautiful.
La vie est belle.
Bomoi — life. The full, breathing, present-tense fact of being alive, not just biological existence. Bomoi is the word elders use when they bless a newborn ("pesa ye bomoi malamu" — give him a good life), and the word grieving families return to when they say "bomoi ezongi te" — life does not come back. In Congolese speech bomoi is treasured rather than assumed: every day given is a day to thank.
