Ko — the most important grammatical particle in Lingala. 1. INFINITIVE PREFIX: placed before any verb root it marks the infinitive ("to..."): kofungola = to open; kokanga = to close; koya = to come. 2. FUTURE TENSE MARKER: placed after the subject pronoun before the verb root it marks the future: Nakofungola = I will open; Tokokanga = We will close. 3. SLANG (Kinshasa street speech): shouted alone as an emphatic filler meaning "man!" or "look!" — e.g. Zoba ko! = "What a fool, man!"
